Tag London

1) Summarise the Ill Manors Tag London campaign in 100 of your own words.
- The Tag London campaign involved the audience from Plan B's following to help promote the film. What he did was get them to tweet what the song meant to him using the hashtag #ILLMANORS and he went around London and projected them on London Landmarks such as the house of Parliament.

2) How does the Ill Manors Tag London campaign help to promote Plan B, the soundtrack and the film?
-This campaign was a good way to promote the film because it was a shock to the people who witnessed the projections on buildings like the House of Parliament. This shock will make it more likely for them to want to search up what Ill Manors is all about and the fact that the tweets are being projected in the well known London Landmarks makes it more likely for the audience to grow as London is a busy place and a lot of people will see the tweets.

3) What synergy (links) can you find between the Tag London campaign and other texts you have studied as part of the Ill Manors case study?
- A synergy that is evident in the campaign as well as the film is the urban feel to it. The film is set in an area where there are council estates and the characters in the film are dressed in a way that shows this like hoodies for example that suggest that they are troublesome and careless. This is linked to the campaign as they projected the tweets in graffiti form, which is something that is more likely to be stereotyped towards the people who live in council estate as it is seen as deviant behaviour.
- Another is within the tweets there is a link to the clip of the TEDx lecture. One of the tweet mentioned '#INSPIREKIDS DON'T PUT THEM DOWN?' In the TEDx lecture Plan B mentioned 'Find out what kids are good at. It will change their lives' Which was the basis of the whole lecture, explaining why it is important for kids to be encouraged to do what the want and not to let their struggles be an obstacle in their path.

4) Why might user-generated campaigns like this be more successful than traditional media campaigns? Offer three different reasons UGC-driven campaigns are popular with media institutions.
- User generated campaigns are far more successful than traditional media campaigns as it involves the audience more and it voices their opinions and makes them feel like they are a part of what is going on.
- Not only that but it generates a larger word of mouth, in this campaign Plan B's following would already want to be a part of the campaign and they will want to share this and let other people know of this and therefore get more publicity. The more word of mouth there is the more news of the film.
- Also, its the cheapest way to promote a film on a large scale. Some films get the audience to create things like fan-art, tweets etc. to get them involved and this a cheap way to get aspects of the film to be promoted easily.

5) Choose FIVE of the tweets above and for each one write what target audience the tweet could appeal to (demographics/psychographics) and then link the tweet to one other media text you have studied as part of the Ill Manors case study (TEDx lecture, music video etc.) Justify your link for each tweet using examples from the film/promotional material.

-'ON PRINCIPLE, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TEENAGER LOOTING TRAINERS AND A POLITICIAN STEALING THOUSANDS IN EXPENSES? #ILLMANORS'
-#ILLMANORS, SOCIETY REBELLING BACK AT BROKEN BRITAIN, @4PLANB
Music video

This appeals to the the time of the riots and those who have strong opinions about the issues related to it whether it be the teenagers that it affected or the government. It is mostly political and targets David Cameron's broken Britain.

-#ILLMANORS #IGNORINGTHEPROBLEM DOES NOT SOLVE IT? #INSPIREKIDS DON'T PUT THEM DOWN? #SOCIALCHANGECOMESTHROUGHACTION NOT INACTION? @4PLANB
-#ILLMANORS INCLUSION NOT EXCLUSION.
TEDx lecture

These tweets appeal more to those who live in the conditions that have a lot of problems and that Plan B focuses on when he is talking in his lecture about how the kids are not encouraged and motivated enough to do better and improve their situation which leads to a whole cycle of failure.

PLAN B'S #ILLMANORS MOVEMENT IS SICK, GET INVOLVED
Film Poster

The use of the word 'sick' means two different things in both context. In the poster it is to show that he is puking and in the tweet is to express an opinion, a way of saying cool.
This appeal more to the younger generation maybe those who were involved in the riots. This tries to involves them in expressing their opinion and beliefs.

Ill Manors: TEDx lecture blog task

1) Make notes on the lecture: focus on Plan B/Ben Drew's views on the opportunities for young people in London and how these inspired Ill Manors.
- ignored by society
- listen to favourite rappers, words guided them -negative words
- fan of conscious hip hop that is like hip hop
- wanted to change things through hip hop
- wants to spread a positive message and try to reach out to the kids.
- unorthodox way of spreading positivity, hooks the audience in by making his music sound like the rest of the hip hop out there as the kids are attracted to the violent words and swearing in songs.
- cares about the project because it links to the him going back to his centre. getting kids to express the characters in the films as they should be, realistically

2) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.
- Plan B doesn't agree with most of the things he sees that have to do with politics. he believes that the government's view about the youth is not correct and that the fact that they have negative stereotypes for people who live on council estates. Plan B believes that the term 'chav' is a derogatory term that should be treated similarly to prejudice between race and sex.

3) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films? Is there more than one audience for this talk?
- I believe that the target audience for the TEDx lectures are students who go to college or university and maybe even older. It is aimed at both male and female equally upper/middle class ABC1 audience. It can be inferred from the audience in the clip as they seem well dressed and composed and also the way Plan B speaks slightly differently to the way he would in his music videos.. However, if it was for his music/film, the target audience would differ which is evident from the characters of the film and the way they speak, which is more suited for those who are familiar with the terminology.

4) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panicsRead this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.
- Plan B mentions that he thinks that there is a 'demonization of youth' and the fact that they are judged without even being are of their problems and struggles and their life story. This can be linked to Cohens theory of moral panics as it leads to hate being fuelled and people hating the youth and their actions and calling them derogatory terms like 'chav', which in turn excludes them from society, which is similar to what happens when there is news of a terror attack.

Ill Manors: Broadcast platform concluded

DVD extras
Watch the Making Of Ill Manors from the DVD extras.

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?

- This tells us that his intentions were to make the audience understand the life of youth and people who live in a council estate. He wanted to bring light to the fact that people who live in this area do not get the attention they need and the help they need. There are many negative stereotypes that are linked to living in a council estate.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

- I learnt that he didn't have a lot of money and had to make compromises that best suited what he was doing. He also wanted actors that had experience with the situation he was getting them to play to make sure the realism that is being portrayed is as accurate as it can be. The reason why he wrote ill manors is because of short films he made in the past where he had to shorten a script into five pages because of low budget and he thought to narrate it through rapping. Which is why he narrates parts of the film Ill Manors by rapping. There was another short film he enjoyed where he really wanted to know each character and what their story was and where they were from which lead to how Ill manors was written to go into the lives of different characters in the film.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?

- If you looked at the posters of the film without watching the film then you would assume the target audience is for teenagers but when you actually watch the entire film you begin to realise that it is more aimed to the older generation of the audience demographic, people who are usually in their 20-30's. As it is bringing light to the life of others and what they have to go through living in a council estate.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the 'making of' documentary.

This company likes to focus on small Artists that are growing in the music industry and are building their way to the top. The target audience for SBTV would be predominantly males rather females that are around the ages 15 to about 29. As it mainly targets the younger generation.

1) What is SOHK.TV?
- It stands for School of Hard Knocks. They use sport to tackle the issues surrounding unemployment, crime and health. They work with individuals to help them move foreward with their lives in a positive direction.

2) Why is Ill Manors a good fit to promote on SOHK.TV?
- Ill Manors is a good fit to promote on SOHK.TV because in the film it focuses on things like Criminal activity in council estate areas and therefore the target audience would be very similar as they are both trying to make awareness to similar ideas.

3) What kind of audience would subscribe to SOHK.TV? Is it a different audience to the main target audience for Ill Manors? Why might this benefit Ben Drew and the institutions behind Ill Manors?
- I think that the target audience for SOHK.TV is similar to the target audience in ill Manors because they focus on similar aspects of society. Hence the audience are more likely to identify with what they talk about. This would benefit Ben Drew in the sense that people that enjoy watching SOHK.TV will enjoy watching what Ill Manors have to offer.

-The Jonathan Ross Show is a British chat show presented by Jonathan Ross. It was first broadcast on ITV. He has been a controversial media figure due to the Sachsgate scandal. where he and Russel Brand caused distress to Andrew Sachs before his death.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
- i think the target audience for this interview will vary from late teens to the older generation in their 40's. This is because in the interview, they talk about different topics that concern different age groups. For example, getting kicked out of school concerns the teens and the riots more appeal to the older generation who are more involved with politics.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

- The target audience for BBC Radio 1 is People aged 30 and above. I think this because BBC focuses a lot on politics as the speak about during this interview.

Print platform: blog tasks

Read the following print articles:

For EACH of the four interviews, embed an image or screengrab from that magazine's brand and work through the following questions and tasks:

Men's Health Interview

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
- The target audience for this magazine would be mainly men more focused on the middle aged maybe teen audience, so about the ages of 17-35. This is because the magazine is focused on men's health and people of that age group, particularly the teens care about their physique and how they look. In this article specifically Ben Drew talks about how losing weight made him more confident.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?

- The audience pleasure that this article offers is personal identity with the fact that they may want to start losing weight and the fact that Ben Drew wanted to lose weight and ended up doing so and is talking about how it made him feel afterwards can make the audience who are going through the same thing feel a sense of identification.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
- In this print interview there is a use of quotes from the interviewee Plan b to show his response. There are headlines of the questions/topic that is being spoken about. It is also systematically placed and asked.

4) How is narrative used to tell a story in each interview? Clue: what is it that keeps the reader interested in the article to the very end?

- Throughout the article Ben Drew is talking about the struggles and the complication he went through whilst losing weight but what makes the reader interested is at the very end when he explains the positive outcome of losing the weight and how it made him feel more confident.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far?

-There is synergy in this text because the first question they asked is about the film and it links to other broadcast examples we have studied such as the music video because it mentions the London riots and information about that was featured in the music video itself as well.

NME Magazine interview

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
- I believe that the target audience for NME is people who enjoy music as it is a largely focuses on the music industry and what goes on there. The article attracts the audience by offering to listen to the soundtrack of the album.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?

- The article also shows a form of surveillance as it informs the readers of what the problems with society are and how the government are making the decisions that could affect their lives. Plan B expressing his opinions about this and the fact that he doesn't agree with the choices that are being made for both the government and the youths that caused the 'riots'.

- In the interview Narrative is used to tell the story of how the riots began and how Plan B feels about it. He explains the events in a linear direction from how the government decided to cut funds and that made the youths decide to riot.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far?

- We can see synergy in the pictures that are used and the music video for the song Ill Manors as Plan b is wearing the same outfit as he was in the music video in the pictures. The fact that the magazine is focusing on the contents of the music video where Plan B 'attacks David Cameron' is another link.

Guardian interview

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
- Based on the magazine I believe that the target audience that they are trying to attract are people who are interested in film/directing, the creative industry and are wondering how Ben Drew began his journey into the film industry and what his story was. This audience is attracted through the fact that they are using Plan B, Ben Drew's stage name as an artist, as he already has a following through the music industry.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?

- I believe this article gives a form of surveillance since it informs the reader of Plan B's life growing up in council estates and his home life. It shows the readers that he grew up struggling and has not let those struggles affect his life and has turned that into something positive. It informs the reader of what kind of person Plan B is and what he cares about and wants to bring light to in his music and in this film.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
- Quotes
- Pictures

- In this interview narrative is used to tell the story of how he got into making music and eventually filmmaking. It is told in a linear direction where Plan B begins by talking about his childhood and from then on progresses into his adulthood life. This keeps the reader interested as they are learning what made him who he is now and his struggles and how he overcome them.

5) What synergy can you find between this text and the broadcast examples we have studied so far?

- There is synergy in the film with the article by using the a still of the scene where Riz Ahmed is looking In the mirror with a gun in his hand as an image in the article.

Daily Mail review of Ill Manors

1) Identify the target audience (demographics/psychographics) for this magazine. How is that particular audience attracted?
- I believe the target audience for this magazine is for the older generation who are strongly aware of what is going on with politics. They tend to be heavily critical because of this, it will attract the audience as the entire article is pointing out aspects of the film in a negative way.

2) Does the article do more than just entertain? How? (Think of Uses and Gratifications theory) What audience pleasures does the article offer?

- This article shows a use of personal relationship in the sense that the ideas that are presented may agree with the target audience of the article and there for they are able to identify with it and are more likely to read more.

3) What codes/conventions of print interviews can you find in the article?
- Still from the film

    Ill Manors music video

Ill Manors music video: blog task

    Media Forms
How is it typical of a music video?
    - This music video has a lot of performance element to it. In this music video the artist Plan B features in it most of the time with him lip syncing to the words. There are a range of shots of Plan B from Close ups to Medium long shots. This allows the audience to see his emotions and actions within the different shots. Most of the shots have the artist in a real life situation hence the majority of the music video being shot in medium shot to long shots.

The shots where Plan B is performing in the video he is looking directly at the camera most of the time which is a way of directly addressing the audience. This is significant because of the topics he talks about in his rap which require the audience to be paying attention and if it looks like Plan B is talking to them directly then the audience are more likely to focus on what is being said in the video.

There is a lack of narrative in the music video as it is more of an informative video where it is just showing a collection of facts and trying to show the life of people who live in a council estate. There is also a use of footage from the news of the riots and the activities on the streets which weren’t recorded by Plan B hence a narrative can’t be made from it. Since the music video runs for about 4 minutes, there is a lot of fast paced editing and quick cuts. This adds to the fact that life in a council estate and the riots are very chaotic.

    Media Representations

How does it represent the London riots/rioters?

    - In this clip London rioters are represented in a negative way where they are portrayed as violent and careless. This is shown through the short clips taken from the news of the London riots where they are being destructive and burning things. In the music video there are parts where the teens are just hanging around as groups which could also be seen in a negative way. This reinforces the idea that Plan B believes that the Youth are misunderstood and are not taken seriously by the political leaders.

A stereotype that Plan B very cleverly points out is that ‘chavs’ live in a council house and are violent. This shows that there are only negative things associated with the lower classes. He mentions that illegal immigrants also live in areas like that which can be further emphasised by the fact that the majority of the actors in the music video are POC and not necessarily white.

    Media Audiences

What audience pleasures does the music video offer?
    - This music video offers audience pleasure like Personal identity. This is because in the music video you can see that the actors are in a council estate and as well as the music itself talks about the struggles and the problems they have to face and problems with politics. The audience can identify with this as they may live in a council estate and feel the same about the lyrics of the song.

Another audience pleasure you can get from this is surveillance. The Lyrics of the song talks about politics and the problems with it, how the upper class don’t listen. So this will give an idea to the audience of the life of people who live in a council estate and what they go through. This would show that it is more aimed at an audience that is aged around their mid 20's to 30's maybe even above as they would be most interested in the lifestyle of people in council estates. However, it also informs the younger generation of the problems and may encourage them to do something about it. This links to what Ben Drew was trying to do in his film ill MANORS.

The music video also shows a sense of personal relationships. This is because of the fact that the characters that are featured in the film are also featured in the music video such as Ed, Aaron and Chris, this will then gain a positive reaction from the audience as they will recognise the who they are from the film.

    Media Institutions

How does the music video help to promote the film of the same name?
    - There is synergy between the film characters and the actors in the music video. The main characters of the film also feature in the music video. This will generate a reaction from the audience as they will recognise the actors from the music video in the film. Also the fact that the title of the song is the same for the film also plays a part in helping promote the film.

Not only that but the fact that Plan b already has a following and that they believe he is a talented artist may add to the fact that it could raise enigma codes from the audience as they would start wonder how well a film directed by him would do. Especially based on the topics he brings light to in the film.

    Ill Manors: film review

    Ill Manors

Use the planning sheet we worked on in class to write a 500-word review of Ill Manors.

Look at examples of film reviews and make sure you use the key conventions:
    • Name of film, year of release and director
    • Optional star rating
    • Basic introduction to plot and characters - without giving away the ending!
    • Comments on notable elements, strengths or weaknesses
    • Your own views on the film (ideally blended with the point above)
    • A snappy or memorable ending that sums up the film

You can also use film sites to help you - these contain a mixture of user-written reviews and links to professionally written reviews:

The film Ill Manors was released in june 2012 and directed by Ben Drew who is also known as Plan B. The genre of the film is a crime, drama set in the Britain. The main character of the film is played by Riz Ahmed who is portrayed as a character that is morally conflicted.

This film is based on the lives of different characters throughout the film that go through different struggles and dealing with different situations. This multi-narrative film involves the stories of characters like prostitutes, single mothers and drug dealers. It heavily focuses on the negatives of living in a council estate. however there are some positives which are seen towards the end.

What was interesting was the unique way of portraying the film and how it was presented to the audience. Each character is introduced by Ben Drew himself as he is the narrator, how he does this is by rapping the backstory of their life which gives the audience an idea of what they have gone through and how they have come to be where they are in the current moment of the film. The narrator repetitively interrupts the film every time a new character is introduced which is unconventional of a typical film. However, i like the fact that he incorporates the art of rapping which is what he originally was known for in his film.

What is also interesting about this film is how the narrative is not conveyed in a linear direction in the film. Each character that is introduced plays an important role in the film and in other characters stories as well as they are all linked.

In my opinion i think that Ben Drew got across to the audience what he wanted to highlight in the film. The fact that people that live in areas like this struggle to go about their daily lives and that they are in a repetitive cycle. It is clear to the audience from the moral conflicts of Riz Ahmed's character the difficulties there are in picking the right choice.

overall the film is a very well done and produced very well.
