- There is a use of enigma codes, A baby was shown during the trailer and this could in turn make the audience wonder why and how the baby fits in the storyline. There is also lots of action codes like when one of the characters was holding a gun to another mans face, it makes the audience aware that they can expect action set pieces like shooting and death, especially when there was blood shown on the screen. There is a use of text on screen at the beginning that is unconventional to how it would be used nowadays. Nowadays it would be quick and short however at the beginning of this trailer it is longer.

Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

- The target audience for Ill Manors is more for the older generation as it is rated 18. From this it is obvious that the target audience it more for the older generation. This is because of the types of scenes that are shown in the film, which are not suitable for people under 18. This film may attract the audience as because of this as it shows things and ideas that the audience may be familiar with and therefore make it easier to build personal relationships with the characters. However, there is also an element of surveillance where throughout the trailer you can see the effects of these things and it informs the audience of the good and bad affects of these.

The scenes are edited with a lot of straight cuts and is fast paced to match with the audio of the trailer. The narrative of the film is suggested but there is no clear narrative of what is going to happen. Which may appeal to the audience as they would have enigma codes that will make them want to watch the film as they would want to find out more about the narrative and how what is shown in the trailer fits in it.

The music may also appeal to the target audience as it used in a way where it is the narrator of the film. In the trailer it says 'as i take you back and forth through time' Which is introducing how the film is going to be presented to the audience. This may appeal to the audience as it is a unique way to incorporate the narrator and the music to make it seem more interesting to the audience.

- Also the setting of the film shows that it is in a suburban area, a place that can be recognised by the audience which shows that it is a realistic drama film and reflects real life situations. The lighting used is highkey to get a more realistic look and so that we can see the characters more clearly which emphasises the fact that is a drama film which typically use highkey lighting so that it looks natural.

The fact that the characters have props like guns in their hands suggested that there is an element of crime as well. This is further emphasised by The camera shots where they have close ups of the drugs being dealt with and the weapons being used. In the trailer the dialogue that is heard is aggresive and the characters are usually shouting.

As not many people who aren't British recognise the locations and terminology of the British culture. So it would be difficult for it to even appeal to a wider audience from different countries. This may suggest that it may be targeted towards a niche audience that enjoy low-budget independent films.

- The British film industry has been production led rather than distribution led. This means that many UK films are made but, in order to get the film exhibited, the filmmakers have to sacrifice the distribution rights by selling the film to a distribution company. Once sold, all revenue from cinema screenings, DVD and Blu-ray sales, plus sales to television companies, are lost.

- Their second option is that they is to make low budget independent films for a niche audience despite the facts that the profits would be lower. however, it is more likely to retain what makes the film British

6) In your opinion, which of these two options would best safeguard the future of the British film industry?
- In my opinion i think that it is better to produce more independent films for a niche audience as it most likely to remain a British film. Although the profits will be low, we could use different promotional techniques to get word of mouth and help the film reach a larger audience.

MEST1: Assessment response

January assessment: learner response

Feedback

There are actually loads of positives here; you are focused on the question, you pitch out relevant moments in the clips and use some media terminology. Just one to add...
There simply isn't enough depth and detail to your answers. Also, you are lacking in media theory. However, your main focus needs to be on developing much more detailed paragraphs using specific reference to the clip, media terminology and a relevant theory if applicable.

Learner response - Audience

The short film makes it easy to build personal relationships with the characters in the advertisement. Similarily to the way the wife and the daughter protected the man from getting injured by acting as the seatbelt as a safety precaution, it makes us identify with them as we the audience wan to also keep our family safe.

The Hypodermic needle would explain the advert as a passive acceptance of information to the audience. As it is basically showing to the audience that wearing a seat belt you could die. Which is what is what the audience automatically sees to be the direct message without considering anything else. This is useful because it gets the message across very easily.

This clip appeals to a wide audience that are ABC1C2 because of the fact that its an advertisement for car accidents and people who are of those status tend to travel by some kind of vehicle. In terms of psychographics it would appeal the most towards the mainstreamers who value family and linking to the hypodermic needle they are conformist and passive

The lack of dialogue used emphasises the emotional connection that is trying to be presented to the audience. This would appeal to a wide audience because it will make them want to share this information with the people they know so that they are aware of the dangers.
